Training Reminders:
ALL TRAINING MUST BE DOCUMENTED AND RECORDS OF THIS TRAINING MUST BE KEPT IN THE LABORATORY'S SAFETY BINDER.
Training records must include at a minimum the following:
- date of training
- trainer's name
- topics of training
- printed list of attendee and their signature
Initial Training
- All participants in activities of the Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering Department must have attended, at a minimum, the General Safety Seminar offered by the College of Engineering (COE) each Fall.
- Each participant in a laboratory that has chemicals, or other hazardous materials, must have attended, at a minimum, the Chemical/Laboratory Safety class offered by the campus' Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) unit or the Chemical Safety in Laboratories offered by COE in the Fall.
- The Principal Investigator for each laboratory must specify what other training is required for the laboratory. The PI must either require training offered by EH&S or provide facility-specific training related to the activities in the laboratory. At a minimum, the PI must train participants on the standard operating procedures of the laboratory.
- UCD's Environmental Health and Safety office offers safety training on such topics as Biological Safety and Medical Waste Management, Hazardous Waste Management, Chemical Laboratory Safety, Laser Safety, etc.
Annual Training
- Each laboratory must have a refresher training for all personnel, at least annually, covering laboratory-specific safety procedures, protocols, and practices.
- Document all laboratory-specific training including topics covered, who performed the training, and who attended using either the training checklist from the Chemical Hygiene Plan in your "Red Binder" or this MAE specific sheet (MS Word format) edited appropriately.
At a minimum the following training topics should be covered:
- Waste container training (see EH&S Safety Net 8 and EH&S Safety Net 110) - wet labs.
- Chemical Spill Response Guidelines (see EH&S Safety Net 13) - all labs.
- Be prepared for CUPA audits at any time (see EH&S Safety Net 120) - wet labs.
- Evacuation Procedures - all labs.
- The Chemical Hygiene Plan and Standard Operating Procedures of each laboratory must be reviewed on an annual basis.
