Undergraduate Program - Overview

Department Mission Statement

The Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering is committed to educating future engineers so they may contribute to the economic growth and well-being of both the state and nation, and to the advancement of knowledge in the mechanical and aeronautical sciences.

Program Educational Objectives

  1. To provide a background in the mathematical and physical sciences appropriate for the solution of engineering problems
  2. To provide engineering design experiences in a competitive environment that emphasize written and oral communication skills, and cooperative group decision making
  3. To provide an approach to the requisite engineering disciplines that allows and encourages life-long learning
  4. To provide the basic computational, experimental and manufacturing skills necessary for the conduct and assessment of engineering experiments
  5. To provide an awareness of the ethical and societal responsibilities that accompany the practice of engineering

Description of Program

The Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering offers a multi-disciplinary program of education and research in the analysis and design of mechanical, thermal, and aeronautical systems, products, and processes. The present emphasis of the program is on the applications of modern computer and multi-media technologies, and advanced computations, laser diagnostics, smart materials, robotics, and mechatronics in design and manufacturing, dynamics and control of machines and vehicles, transportation systems, thermal and energy systems, combustion and air pollution, fluid dynamics, and aerospace structures and vehicles.
